Plain answers to the questions people ask most.
Open your family tree and choose Add family, then Grandparents. Type her name and whatever you know: a rough birth year and the town she was born in help most. You can fill in the rest later.
If you have not added her child (your parent) yet, add them first: Nostari places people through the family you have already entered.
Connections is where Nostari tells you that another family’s tree may have some of the same people as yours, for example the same great-grandmother. You compare the two side by side and answer: the same person, or not.
It is also where requests that need your answer wait, such as a relative asking to join your tree.
The people helping with your family tree, and the families your tree has been joined with (unless the tree’s owner switches that off in Settings). Nobody else. Everyone else sees only “Living relative”, with no name, dates, places or photo.
Only when both families say yes, the people you both have become one profile each, with the facts from both sides. Your two trees stay separate, but each can now see the other’s shared people, and relatives in one family can find their cousins in the other.
For 30 days after a join, open it from Recent in your family on your Home page, or from Connections, and choose Undo. Everyone goes back to how they were before, on both sides.
Go to Invite a relative (also in the menu under your initials). Choose who they are in your tree if you have added them, so they can take over their own profile, and add a short note. You get a link to send them; add their email and we send it for you.
An invitation works once, for 30 days.
About a quarter of a million well-known people and their relatives, gathered from Wikipedia and Wikidata. Nobody owns them: anyone can suggest a correction, and two other members check it before it changes. Pages from the public record carry a small globe.
Any form works: 1952, March 1952, about 1950. A full date like 14 March 1952 is fine too. When a date such as 3/4/1952 could mean two things, we ask which you meant, or you can set it once in Settings.
They are a living person looked after by another family, and your trees have not been joined (or that family keeps its living relatives to itself). You see “Living relative” instead. If you think you are related, add them in your own tree and Nostari will ask their family whether it is the same person.
In Settings, under Reading, choose Standard, Large or Largest. You can also choose a light or dark theme there. It applies to every page on that device.
Use Import a family file in the menu. A spreadsheet (CSV or Excel) works: we show you what we understood before anything is added.
In Settings, under your email address, choose “Ask us to change it”. We write to you at your current address to set up the new one, so nobody else can move your account.
Visitors who are not signed in only ever see faces from the public record: well-known people with a Wikipedia page. They never see your family.
Living people are private to their family, and to families joined with theirs. Everyone else sees “Living relative” and nothing more.
Two families are joined only when both say yes, and either can undo it for 30 days. Photos you upload have their location details removed, and are shown only to signed-in members. Your family never appears in search engines.
